Prices come from South Ferry's rate schedule effective May 12, 2025 and are the same all year. Payment is on board in cash (the FAQ also mentions checks); credit cards are not accepted. Round-trip fares are valid only if both halves are used the same day. The auto fare covers the driver, and every other adult passenger pays the walk-on fare. Trucks over 22 feet, buses and specialty vehicles have separate rates on the full rate sheet; vehicles over 80,000 lb are priced by agreement. All fares in US dollars (USD).

South Ferry is the boat service that links the south shore of Shelter Island with North Haven, the point of the South Fork beside Sag Harbor. It is not the Staten Island ferry terminal at the tip of Manhattan, and it is not North Ferry, the separate Shelter Island company that sails to Greenport on the North Fork. Those two companies run their own vessels and sell their own tickets; South Ferry's FAQ says outright that its ticket is not valid on North Ferry. There is no printed departure list. The operator says boats run continuously every 10 to 15 minutes, 365 days a year. From Sunday to Thursday the first boat leaves Shelter Island at 5:20 am and North Haven at 5:30 am, and the last leaves Shelter Island at 11:45 pm and North Haven at 11:50 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays the last boats run much later, at 1:45 am from Shelter Island and 1:50 am from North Haven. Fares do not change with the season, and the current sheet took effect on May 12, 2025 after the Suffolk County Legislature approved an increase on May 6. A car under 22 feet, driver included, is $18.00 one way or $25.00 for a round trip that must be finished the same day. Each passenger on foot pays $2.00 one way or $4.00 round trip, a bicycle and rider $5.00 or $8.00, and a motorcycle $9.00 or $12.00. Trucks are charged by length, with the one-way price equal to the length in feet minus two dollars, so a 30-foot truck is $28.00. Prepaid books never expire: ten car trips cost $115 one way or $150 round trip, and 20 round-trip passenger tickets cost $60. Bring cash. The operator takes cash on board (its FAQ also allows a check), not credit cards, and there is an ATM near each dock. You queue in the right-hand lane, switch off your headlights and put your phone away until the crew waves you aboard. Anyone heading for the Orient Point ferry is told to drive north across Shelter Island, take North Ferry to Greenport and allow about 90 minutes from North Haven. The Shelter Island dock at 135 South Ferry Road is also the company office (Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm); the North Haven dock is at 400 Ferry Road.
  • Arrive at the terminal several minutes before departure; vehicle lanes close earlier than the foot-passenger gate.
  • Check the operator's service alerts before you set out — weather, tides and vessel maintenance change sailings.
  • Confirm accepted payment methods: some crossings are card-only and some take cash only.
