Passage is sold as round-trip tickets only, and unused halves never expire. Passenger, commuter and bicycle tickets can be bought on MaineDOT's ticket webstore; vehicle reservations are made by phone or at the terminal, and truck tickets at an office. All prices below are Tariff 11 (effective June 1, 2025) and are per round trip. A peak ticket stays valid in the off-peak months, while an off-peak ticket can be traded up to a peak one by paying the difference. There are no senior, military or AAA discounts. All fares in US dollars (USD).
Three round trips a day is all the Maine State Ferry Service runs to North Haven, and one vessel, the Captain Neal Burgess, covers every one of them. MaineDOT publishes a single timetable for the route with no summer, fall or winter versions on the page. The only carve-outs are Thanksgiving Day, when just the first two sailings run, and Christmas Day and New Year's Day, when nothing sails.
The crossing from Rockland is 12.5 miles and takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Boats leave North Haven at 7:30 am, 12:30 pm and 3:45 pm, and leave Rockland at 9:30 am, 2:20 pm and 5:15 pm. A day visitor who takes the 9:30 am from Rockland lands around 10:40 am and can catch the 3:45 pm home, which leaves about five hours on the island; the 12:30 pm return allows under two. The 5:15 pm from Rockland has no return the same evening, so it works as the boat for overnight stays and island residents heading home.
Tickets are sold only as round trips, and the price depends on the calendar. Peak season runs June 1 through September 30 and off-peak runs October 1 through May 31, both under Tariff 11. An adult round trip is $23.00 in peak season and $15.75 off-peak, a car and driver is $55.00 or $41.50, and a bicycle rider is $29.75 or $22.75. The changeover lands on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Vehicles need the most forethought. Reservations for North Haven open one month before travel: in person at the Rockland terminal from 6:30 am, or by phone from 9:30 am at 207-596-5400. They close two hours before sailing and cost $17.00 on top of the fare. Truck reservations go through the island office instead. If you have no reservation and want to bring a vehicle off the island, call the same number the day before, press 3 and then 2, between 11:00 and 11:30 am to be assigned a line number. You then line up between 6:45 and 7:00 am for the first boat, 11:45 am and noon for the midday boat, or 3:00 and 3:15 pm for the afternoon boat.
The terminals are at 517A Main Street (Route 1) in Rockland and 18 Main Street in North Haven, where staff hours of 6:30 am to 4:00 pm are not departure times.
Arrive at the terminal several minutes before departure; vehicle lanes close earlier than the foot-passenger gate.
Check the operator's service alerts before you set out — weather, tides and vessel maintenance change sailings.
Confirm accepted payment methods: some crossings are card-only and some take cash only.
Frequently asked questions
Three each way. From Rockland they sail at 9:30 am, 2:20 pm and 5:15 pm; from North Haven at 7:30 am, 12:30 pm and 3:45 pm. The same timetable applies every day of the week.
Yes, but only with the morning boat. The 9:30 am sailing reaches the island at about 10:40 am, and the 3:45 pm from North Haven brings you back roughly five hours later. The 12:30 pm return leaves under two hours ashore, and the 5:15 pm from Rockland has no return that night.
Only round trips are sold. In peak season (June 1 to September 30) an adult pays $23.00, a 6-17 year old $15.00 and a child under 6 nothing. From October 1 to May 31 the adult fare is $15.75 and the minor fare $8.00.
A standard vehicle round trip is $55.00 in peak season and $41.50 off-peak, with vehicles over 20 feet charged extra per foot. A reservation adds $17.00 per vehicle on each leg, so $34.00 for a reserved round trip, and trucks are billed at $7.00 (peak) or $6.00 (off-peak) per foot.
Call 207-596-5400 the day before you travel, press 3 for North Haven and 2 for the line-number queue. Numbers are handed out by phone only between 11:00 and 11:30 am, one per call; after 11:30 am any left are given in person or by pressing 4 for an agent.
The crossing is 12.5 miles and takes 1 hour 10 minutes. MaineDOT posts one all-year timetable for this route, with no sailings on Christmas Day or New Year's Day and only two on Thanksgiving Day.
The captain decides about 30 minutes before each departure, and each round trip is judged separately. MaineDOT posts cancellations on New England 511 and on its ferry Facebook page, and the terminal keeps a recorded update line.
In Rockland the terminal is at 517A Main Street (Route 1), with a pay-in-lane lot beside it. In North Haven it is at 18 Main Street; staff are there from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm every day.
