Wicomico County has operated the Whitehaven Ferry free of charge since its inception; there is no fare for passengers, vehicles, motorcycles, or bicycles. The county has posted a 6-passenger, 20,000-pound weight limit per crossing since the ferry's 2017/2019 overhaul.
Two practical limits the county publishes and that catch people out: each ferry takes six passengers and 20,000 lb, and there are no crossings at all after the posted closing time. If you are towing and arrive to a closed ferry, the county warns there is only a limited area to turn a trailer around.
- Arrive at the terminal several minutes before departure; vehicle lanes close earlier than the foot-passenger gate.
- Check the operator's service alerts before you set out — weather, tides and vessel maintenance change sailings.
- Confirm accepted payment methods: some crossings are card-only and some take cash only.
