The St. Johns River Ferry carries State Road A1A across the river in Duval County, Florida, joining Mayport Village with Fort George Island at the two ends of the A1A crossing. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority took over operation on March 31, 2016. JTA describes a 0.9-mile voyage across the St. Johns, 2.5 miles inland of the river mouth, that takes roughly five minutes. The timetable is simple and fully published. Boats leave Mayport on the hour and half hour and Fort George Island at quarter past and quarter to. Weekday service runs from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Mayport and 6:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. from Fort George; on weekends it runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. That is 26 departures each way on a weekday and 26 each way on a weekend day, all on this page. JTA mentions no holiday timetable. Fares depend on the vehicle and the day. A pedestrian or bicycle pays $1 every day and $0.50 with a senior or reduced-fare STAR card; a motorcycle is $6; a car under 20 feet long is $7 on weekdays and $8 on weekends; a truck, bus or RV of 20 feet or more is $14 and $16. Semitrailers are not allowed. A 20-trip ticket book costs $120 for a car. JTA has posted new fares from January 1, 2027, raising the weekday car fare to $8 and the weekend car fare to $10. Fares are bought through the MyJTA app. One thing to clear up for anyone who has seen it: the ferry page's source code holds an August 15, 2026 notice that the service was temporarily out of service. It is commented out of the page, so it does not appear to readers, and JTA's service-alerts page showed no ferry notice on October 16, 2026. Hours, however, are only a plan; weather or mechanical trouble can still stop a crossing, and JTA directs riders to the MyJTA app or its customer service line, (904) 630-3100, for updates. The Fort George landing sits at 9618 Heckscher Drive and the Mayport landing at 4680 Ocean Street.
  • Arrive at the terminal several minutes before departure; vehicle lanes close earlier than the foot-passenger gate.
  • Check the operator's service alerts before you set out — weather, tides and vessel maintenance change sailings.
  • Confirm accepted payment methods: some crossings are card-only and some take cash only.
