Nor'easter ferries: Block Island cancels all Friday boats, Hy-Line off through Saturday

The nor'easter is at its peak. Overnight the National Weather Service upgraded its Storm Watch to a Storm Warning for the waters the island ferries cross, and it runs until 8 p.m. Saturday. The Block Island Ferry has cancelled every Friday sailing. Hy-Line has no Vineyard boats through Saturday, and the Steamship Authority is down to one boat, sailing trip by trip, on the Nantucket run. Cross Sound has already cancelled crossings for Saturday. Its Woods Hole–Vineyard boats were all still listed on time early Friday. Here is each route, today and tomorrow, and what each company does with your ticket.

Ferry status on Friday, and what is already cancelled for Saturday

Every line below comes from the operator's own status page or alert feed, checked between 4:47 and 5:05 a.m. EDT on Friday.

Status as of 5:05 a.m. EDT, Friday, September 25, 2026Block Island Ferry: every traditional and high-speed departure is cancelled today. Hy-Line Cruises: Martha's Vineyard and inter-island ferries are cancelled today and Saturday, and its Nantucket boat runs trip by trip. Steamship Authority: all 10 high-speed trips between Hyannis and Nantucket are cancelled, and so are 8 of the 14 car-ferry trips. The other 6 depend on one boat, sailing trip by trip. All 54 Woods Hole–Vineyard trips were listed as on time, but the Authority says boats bound for Oak Bluffs are likely to be diverted to Vineyard Haven. Cross Sound Ferry: 15 departures are cancelled today and 6 on Saturday. North Carolina: six of the seven NCDOT ferry routes are suspended.

Thursday was the lead-in. Friday is the storm. At 1:38 a.m. the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton upgraded Thursday's Storm Watch to a Storm Warning for Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. It runs until 8 p.m. Saturday, with northeast winds of 25 to 35 knots, gusts to 55 knots and seas of 7 to 10 feet. The warning tells mariners to "remain in port". Eastern Long Island Sound is under a Gale Warning from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday, which is far longer than the single Friday daytime window forecast on Thursday.

Thursday turned out worse than it looked at dawn. By 2:06 p.m. Hy-Line had cancelled every Nantucket trip for the day, and Cross Sound added the 7 p.m. from New London, bringing its Thursday total to 16. For Saturday, only Hy-Line (Vineyard and inter-island) and Cross Sound (6 departures) had announced cancellations when we checked. The Steamship Authority, the Block Island Ferry and Hy-Line's Nantucket service had not published Saturday plans. No company has said anything about Sunday yet. The Storm Warning ends at 8 p.m. Saturday and the High Wind Warning on land at 2 a.m. Sunday, so Sunday is the first day with a realistic chance of normal sailings.

Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket: Woods Hole is still the way across

Hy-Line's Vineyard boats are off until at least Sunday. The Steamship Authority's Woods Hole boats were still on the schedule on Friday morning, and Nantucket has one boat, sailing trip by trip.

At 4 p.m. Thursday Hy-Line cancelled its Martha's Vineyard and inter-island ferries for both Friday and Saturday. That makes four days in a row without its seasonal Hyannis–Oak Bluffs service, which normally runs until October 25. The Steamship Authority's Vineyard boats cross the shorter route from Woods Hole, and at 4:47 a.m. Friday all 54 of the day's listed trips showed "On Time". There is one catch: the Authority says diversions from Oak Bluffs to Vineyard Haven are "extremely likely", and that service will continue "as weather conditions allow". If you are booked to Oak Bluffs, plan to land in Vineyard Haven.

Nantucket is much harder. The Steamship Authority says the M/V Iyanough (its fast ferry) and the M/V Eagle will not run on Friday. The M/V Woods Hole covers what is left, three round trips on a trip-by-trip basis. The M/V Monomoy will make one morning run to take fuel trucks to the island and bring them back at about 1:30 p.m., with no passengers or cars on board. Standby is closed in Hyannis, and in Nantucket the Authority estimates a 36-hour wait for a standby car, up from 24 hours on Thursday. Hy-Line's Nantucket boat is also running trip by trip. On Thursday it cancelled every trip in stages through the day, the last six at 2:06 p.m.

Vehicle bookings on the Vineyard route: on Thursday the Steamship Authority's status page said new vehicle reservations on Woods Hole–Martha's Vineyard were unavailable from Saturday through Wednesday, September 30, because of a change in vessel assignments unrelated to the storm. That notice was no longer on the page on Friday morning, and the Authority has not said whether the pause has ended. Check availability online or call (508) 477-8600 before you plan on driving a car across this weekend.
On the Vineyard: the Chappy Ferry
The Chappy Ferry between Edgartown and Chappaquiddick has been running only one boat since 11:45 a.m. Thursday because of "high northerly winds and strong tides". It is not taking large vans, trucks or other tall vehicles. Its latest alert says the one-boat service continues "until further notice".
Hy-Line's warning pattern
Hy-Line has posted each full-day Vineyard cancellation the afternoon before, and this time covered two days at once. Nantucket cancellations come a few hours ahead, trip by trip. Check its alerts page or sign up for trip texts.

Block Island and Long Island Sound

Block Island has no ferry at all on Friday. Cross Sound is running a reduced schedule across a Long Island Sound that is under a Gale Warning until Sunday morning.

The Block Island Ferry posted its Friday alert at 5 p.m. Thursday. All traditional and high-speed departures are cancelled "due to adverse sea conditions". Staff will call passengers and drivers who had reservations on Friday morning to refund or reschedule them, and the caller ID will show 866-783-7996. The company is watching the marine forecast for Friday to Sunday and still expects "multiple days of ferry service interruptions". It has not posted anything for Saturday yet. Its website still shows the normal Saturday timetable: six traditional round trips (9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Point Judith) and five high-speed round trips. Treat those as scheduled, not confirmed.

Cross Sound Ferry cancelled 16 departures on Thursday. For Friday it has cancelled 15: 6:30, 7:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 2:30, 3:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. from New London, and 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. and 12:30, 1:30, 4:30, 5:30 and 9:15 p.m. from Orient Point. Its notice lists the 4:30 p.m. from Orient twice, so we count it once. If you are booked on another Orient departure, call to confirm. For Saturday it has cancelled 6: 6:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from New London, and 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Orient. The company says "all other ferries are running as scheduled".

Greenport–Shelter Island
Heading on from Orient Point? The North Ferry links Greenport and Shelter Island Heights. Its website still showed no weather notice early Friday. Peconic and Gardiners Bays are under the same Gale Warning as eastern Long Island Sound until 6 a.m. Sunday, and Northeast Suffolk County has a Coastal Flood Watch from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon, with road closures likely near the waterfront.
Narragansett Bay: Prudence Island
The Prudence Island ferry from Bristol now says cancellations are "likely for Friday PM through Sunday AM". If you call to reschedule a vehicle reservation, the processing fee is waived. Updates go out on its website and by text alert. Narragansett Bay is under a Storm Warning from 2 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The storm, hour by hour: what the Weather Service has in force

Through Sun, Sept. 27
The Steamship Authority expects "significant effects for Cape Cod and the Islands through Sunday, September 27", and its fee waiver runs to the same date.

The Weather Service expects coastal flooding over "multiple high tide cycles from late Friday through the weekend", with the greatest risk south of Boston and on the Cape and Islands. Even once the boats sail again, roads to the terminals may be flooded around high tide.

Refunds and changes: what each company does with your ticket

It depends on who cancelled: the ferry company or you. If the company cancels your sailing, you are usually covered. If you cancel because you are worried about the forecast, normal fees apply unless the company has waived them.

OperatorIf the company cancelsIf you change or cancel

You get one courtesy change up to one calendar day before, by phone only. Vehicle reservations can be changed up to three times, and a refund (minus a $12.85/$25.70 fee) needs 7 days' notice
Cross Sound FerryNot spelled out on its website. Call (860) 443-5281 or (631) 323-2525, or use Change/Cancel onlineCancel before your departure or lose the fare. Vehicle fee: $5 each way if you cancel a day or more ahead, $15 on the day. Passenger tickets cancel free
Prudence Island FerryUpdates on its website and by text alertProcessing fee waived if you call to reschedule a vehicle reservation during the storm: (401) 683-0430
Of the four big operators, only the Steamship Authority is advertising a storm fee waiver, and it is still in place until Sunday. At the other three, your ticket is protected when the company cancels your boat. If you cancel early on your own, the normal rules apply: Hy-Line's 5 p.m. deadline the day before, Block Island's non-refundable online passenger tickets, and Cross Sound's vehicle fees. Cross Sound passenger tickets can be cancelled free, but only before departure. On Saturday's cancelled Hy-Line and Cross Sound trips, the company has cancelled, so the company-cancels rules apply.

How to check your sailing before you leave

Only the operator can tell you whether your boat is going. Local TV and social media reposts can be hours out of date.

1Steamship Authority: the Current Status page
Every trip on both island routes is listed with On Time, Delayed or Cancelled, plus vehicle standby numbers and parking lots. The travel advisory at the top says which boats are running. There are email and text alerts, a day-of-sailing line at (508) 477-7447 on reservation-only dates, and 511 Massachusetts (route code 72).
2Hy-Line: the Alerts page and trip texts
Hy-Line posts each cancellation as an #ALERT on its Alerts page, and the same alerts appear on its Facebook and X accounts. If you booked with a mobile number and opted in, you get a text for your own trip.
3Block Island Ferry: the Service Alert banner
The alert at the top of blockislandferry.com is the official one. Friday's was posted at 5 p.m. Thursday, so expect Saturday's by Friday afternoon. There is a text-alert sign-up at the bottom of the page, and the office is on (866) 783-7996.
4Cross Sound Ferry: the red Departure Cancellations bar
The red bar on longislandferry.com links to the list of cancelled departures, day by day. Changes and cancellations can be made online with Change/Cancel, or by phone at (860) 443-5281 or (631) 323-2525.
5Check again before you drive
The Steamship Authority and Hy-Line are both running Nantucket trip by trip, and Cross Sound has been adding cancellations day by day, so a boat can be cancelled a few hours before it leaves. On Thursday Hy-Line cancelled its Nantucket trips in five separate alerts. A trip that shows on time at dawn tells you very little about the afternoon.

North Carolina: six of seven NCDOT ferry routes suspended

The same coastal low is hitting the Outer Banks. The Weather Service has a Coastal Flood Warning for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands until 11 p.m. Friday, and says NC 12 is closed from the Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe.

Correction to Thursday's version: we said the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferries were the car routes to Ocracoke still running. Both were suspended later on Thursday, so on Friday morning there is no NCDOT ferry to or from Ocracoke. NCDOT's resolution times are its own estimates. The Coastal Flood Warning runs until 11 p.m. Friday, and a High Surf Advisory for Hatteras Island runs until 8 p.m. Saturday. NCDOT's Ferry Information Notification System sends route changes by text or email.
